In my personal opinion there is no such thing as a ‘failed project’. Yes every project has its up’s and down’s, but with each project we are always learning something new. Every project is a new learning experience, what we learn from one project we bring to the next. Even if a project has not produced any data from an instrument due to an instrument failure, then I still don’t called it a ‘failed project’. this is because new skills have been learnt such as working in a team, patience, communication, problem solving, adaptability and flexibility. These are all examples you could take to an interview!

When I was still an undergraduate student I worked on a project that used a very new technique. It was super interesting and I learned so much by using this technique (now it’s actually a pretty famous one in biology and genetics) but what I was trying to do didn’t work. I still don’t consider this a failure, I learned how to work with zebrafish, that are small fish used in biology to study multiple things like diseases and cancer, I learned how to use this technique which now it’s super popular and I learned that I can still make conclusions when things don’t work out. As we say in science ‘no results is a result’ because if you try something and it doesn’t work you can tell other scientists and they can try something else instead of wasting their time. This eventually will lead to someone solving the problem and helping people, so everyone wins!
