I actually hated science at primary school, but loved it when I went to secondary school! I remember my first science and geography lesson and being captivated. Especially by volcanoes, hurricanes, coasts, climate change and space. Since then I knew I wanted to go into science. I was never clever at school and was not allowed to take physics as a GCSE, which is why I ended up going down the geography route. But in the end I have my dream job as being a scientist 🙂

As a 11 year old I liked dis-assembling radios and tape-recorders and then putting them back when I was left alone. I liked to solve puzzles (though I haven’t yet managed to solve a Rubik’s cube 🙁 ). I liked doing some Physics experiments at home, especially those related to optics, and sound. This however changed when I had a Dolores Umbridge for a Physics teacher in school for 3 years. My dad thankfully did not give up on me when my Physics teacher at school regularly bullied me. My dad would still encourage me to engage in Physics related activities, in the form of teaching me how to take good photos (thus teaching me about optics). I also tried to relate my music lessons with the theory from Physics, about pitch, timbre, sound conduction in different medium, and so on. I remember once I had damaged a stethoscope of my dad when I tried to “hear what a vibrating tuning fork sounds like under water”. It was lame. I know! But my parents were understanding and they did support me in my efforts so that I could fight back my fear of Physics.
My Chemistry teachers were always the sweetest and the most encouraging ones. And my mom used to be a Biology teacher. So when that Physics teacher made Physics a horror for me I took refuge in Chemistry and Biology. I liked Maths but never quite LOVED it until I was in my Bachelors in Engineering. My other favourite subjects were English Literature and Computer science. However when I had asked myself around the time of my GCSE equivalent exam if I should quit Science because of this terrifying Physics teacher I couldn’t bring myself up to that. I knew then that my love for Science is far more than the fear which that Physics teacher had instilled in me. I know it sounds very cheesy (and I am sorry for that), but I fought my fears for the love of Science, and in the end Physics and I are reunited through Computer Science. 🙂

I started liking science very early because homework was so much faster than writing essays and I didn’t really have to memorize much for exams – which meant more free time for me to paint!! In secondary school I really enjoyed biology because I found it easy to understand and I had some really cool teachers that made it super fun. I did really struggle with physics at school though and I have to admit I’m still afraid of it…
