I’m afraid I don’t know exactly, but there is definitely enough to cause a lot of problems for sea life! I know scientist are now also looking at ‘microplastics’ which are tiny bits of plastic that are shed from pretty much everything (like from washing clothes that have synthetic fibers in them). This means that there is so much more plastic than we originally thought, we just can’t see it!
Unfortunately a lot. There are several patches of plastic and other garbage floating around the oceans (have a look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_garbage_patch). One of those patches in the pacific is 10 times bigger than scotland (70,000 km2 vs 700,000 km2). Plastic is a resistent material and it will take hundreds of year to decompose all of that over time. Therefore, we need to reduce plastic production and recycle what we use everyday.
